Three passenger ships of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) have been prepared at a cost of over Tk 22 lakh for the cruise of lawmakers from the Commonwealth countries.

Several hundred legislators from 100 national and regional parliaments of 46 Commonwealth countries will arrive in Dhaka to participate in the Commonwealth Parlia-mentary Association Conference opening in Dhaka on October 4.

Talking to The Daily Star yesterday, Shipping Minister Akbar Hossain said the BIWTC vessels were repaired, maintained and colourfully decorated for making them fit for the guests. He said the vessels, having a 300-people capacity each, would cruise up to Chandpur on October 8 with the Commonwealth leaders on board.

Sources said the ministry received about Tk 12 lakh from the authorities, but spent over Tk 22 lakh for the renovations.
