Jhenidah halts for 10 mins to protest killing of Mukherjee

The town observed a 10-minute shutdown Monday morning to protest the killing of Dr S K Mukherjee, an octogenarian medical practitioner. Business establishments and educational institutions remained closed and even pedestrians and rickshaws observed the token strike. There was absolute silence in the town during the shutdown beginning 11:00am.

But police have failed to make any progress in the investigation of the case, though two young men, Anwar Hossain of village Bhutiargati and Amirul Islam of Pagla Kanai area in the town, have been arrested. Anwar will be produced before a magistrate's court today. Police could not ascertain the motive behind the killing that took place on September 17.

Jhenidah Nagorik Committee organised a protest meeting Monday afternoon at Agrani Square, with the committee's convenor and Chairman of Jhenidah Municipality, A K M Mashiur Rahman in the chair.

The speakers at the meeting demanded exemplary punishment to the killers of Dr Mukherjee.

A gang of four allegedly killed Dr Mukherjee, former Khulna division president of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), former president of Chuadanga Awami League, founder of Jhenidah BMA and member-president of Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Oikya Parishad.
