Chittagong Hill Tracts Hill Students' Council yesterday submitted a memorandum to Education Minister Dr Osman Farruk urging him to implement their five-point demand including introduction of primary education in their mother languages and five per cent quota in all higher educational institutions.

Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP), an organisation of indigenous students from the hills, also demanded in their memorandum an autonomous secondary and higher secondary education board for CHT, introduction of honours and master courses in government colleges of three hill districts and correction of wrong information in text books regarding the culture of ethnic communities.

A four-member team led by PCP leader Nikhil Mitro Chakma submitted the memorandum to the minister.

Earlier, the PCP held a rally on the Dhaka University campus in support of their demands.

Addressing the rally, the PCP leaders said traditional education system has been continuing in CHT although the 33 (Kha) provisions of CHT treaty envisages primary education through mother languages.

Expressing disappointment over the present situation in CHT, the PCP leaders said the CHT crisis has been complicated as the treaty is yet to be implemented after five years.

Presided over by PCP Dhaka Metropolitan unit Vice-President Ukkyasing Marma, the rally was also addressed by PCP President Uzzal Chakma, Khristofer Riton Asham, Jems Kokshi and Uzzal Azim.

The PCP also brought out a procession.
