Tendency of non-adherence to laws a big problem
"We have plenty of good and beneficial laws but a tendency of non-adherence to rules and regulations is a big problem", he said while delivering the "professor Nazmul Karim Memorial Address" at the Dhaka University here.
Prof Vice-Chancellor Prof Yousuf Haider was chief guest on the occasion while professor Kamrul Ahsan Chowdhury, chairman of the department of sociology, presided. Prof M Afsaruddin gave the introductory speech highlighting the life and works of celebrated sociologist and political scientist Prof Nazmul Karim, whose thoughts and ideas enormously embellished and invigorated the socio-political theories of contemporary times.
Speaking on "Law and society", Justice Mostafa Kamal bemoaned the lack of respect for law to large extent by different segment of people and most unfortunately on part of even at times by those who are supposed to be the custodian of the law. Paradoxically, he said, not necessarily all the lawmakers adhere to the laws, which they themselves enact for good causes.
Justice Kamal regretted the absence of the kind of social awareness that is required for application of laws in the spirit they are enacted and said civil society an others must mount a vigorous movement for a law-based society without any political and other bias. After all, welfare and betterment of the peoples are the supreme consideration for laws and creation of a healthy society is the ultimate objective, he said adding that there can be no slackening on such a count.
Justice Kamal paid glowing tributes to late Dr Nazmul Karim as one of the most respected of the Dhaka University has ever produced and said "what I have learnt from my teacher still serve as precious and invaluable knowledge'.
