Prokoushali O Sramik-Karmachari Parishad of Roads and Highways Department yesterday formed a human chain in front of the Sarak Bhaban in the city to protest the decision of the planning commission to hand over 9,000 km roads to the local government engineering department (LGED).

"In a reclassification of 17 feeder roads, the planning commission intends to hand over 13 roads under the authority of the LGED", said the Vice-President of Engineers' Association Md Nurul Huda while taking part in the human chain.

He said despite RHD's long expertise and thorough experience of managing these roads, the planning commission is transferring them to another department for unknown reason.

The Sangram Parishad, comprising Graduate Engineers' Association, Diploma Engineers' Association, and four registered trade unions of workers and employees of Roads & Highways Department took to the street to press home their three-point demand.

Additional Chief Engineer of RHD and President of Roads Engineers' Association Abed Uddin Ahmed said a certain quarter in the planning commission is hatching a subtle conspiracy to manipulate the reclassification of district roads distorting the definition of roads management.

"This is an unrealistic move which will result in unemployment of thousands of workers and employees at RHD and will foil its diversified programmes centering these roads," he added.

When contacted, Division Chief of Physical Infrastructure of the planning commission SY Khan Majlish told The Daily Star that the decision had been taken in line with the existing government criteria.
