Thousands sing no to drugs

'No to drugs' was echoed yesterday by thousands of youths who vowed to launch a nationwide movement against drug abuse.

Some 15,000 youths thronged the Dhanmondi Women Sports Complex (DWSC) to enjoy the anti-drug 'Rainy Concert' organised by Pepsi and the Prothom Alo in association with Channel i to observe International Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking.

The concert began with Mahmuduzzaman Babu's rendering of Ei sabuj matir buke achho ghumiye katona kal. He sang seven songs including the famous patriotic song Aami Banglai gaan gai.

Beginning with a short speech against the sale of drugs to youths, a promising singer, Asif Akbar, sang six songs.

Narrating her own story of her once drug-addled life, Anusheh Anadil, star singer of 'Bangla', asked the young generation to refrain from taking drugs.

Hasan of Swadhinata asked the crowd to rise up against drug abuse. He rendered six songs.

Biplob of Prometheus began his songs with an anti-drug slogan.

Ayub Bachchu delivered a short anti-drug speech and began singing. The crowd danced and said 'No to drugs'. He rendered 10 songs.

The singers said the family can play a vital role in checking abuse of drugs as it is the most important school of social and moral values.

They made a passionate call upon all families to play active roles and take care of their children.

At the close of the concert, the Prothom Alo Editor Motiur Rahman said another concert would be organised, if necessary, to make the anti-drug movement a success.

Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka inaugurated the concert. In the morning, he inaugurated an anti-drug information material exhibition at the DWSC.
