Elephants trample 3 to death in Rangamati

Three people, including a minor girl, were trampled to death and eight others injured when a herd of wild elephants rampaged through their village in Rangamati district on Wednesday, witnesses and forest officials said.

They said Al Amin, 35, his wife Mahmuda Khatun, 30, and niece Hafiza Khatun, 5, were killed in an early morning swoop on Shofipur village in Rajosthali upazila.

Four to five animals encircled the thatched house of Al Amin, pulled it down in a frenzy and trampled them to death at around 4:00 am, locals said.

The herd also injured eight people in their march through the village, striking panic into the villagers.

Of the injured, Halima Khatun, 40, was admitted to the local upazila health complex and the rest were given first aid.

Divisional forest officer Ratan Kumar Sardar visited the scene.

Earlier on Monday, Salma Begum, 35, of Rangipara village under Bogachatar union of Longdu upazila in the district was hurled to death by an elephant.
