One hundred and forty-seven teachers of Rajshahi University called upon the government yesterday to withdraw Salauddin Quader Chowdhury's nomination for the secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).

In a joint statement, they alleged that Chowdhury, parliamentary affairs adviser to the prime minister, committed war crimes during the Liberation War in 1971.

Chowdhury filed a defamation suit against the editors for running reports on Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil's letter to Prime Minister Khaleda Zia asking her to drop him from the OIC race.

The teachers remarked that Chowdhury was not suitable for the prestigious office and urged the government to replace him with an acceptable personality.

Signatories to the statement included Rajshahi University Teacher's Association President Sayen Uddin and General Secretary Abdul Latif, Social Science Faculty Dean AHM Zahadul Karim, Prof Julficar Matin and Prof Sanod Kumar Saha.
