Civil cops' drive cancelled in city

7Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has cancelled the operation of civil police teams of different police stations in the city.

The order came on Thursday following reports of some of the team members' cosy links with criminals that claimed their non-civil colleagues' lives.

The Daily Star ran a report on the day before the order was passed.

The DMP order said from now onwards police stations must enlist help from the Detective Branch (DB) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police to man special operations.

Thirty-six civil teams under 21 police stations in the city carried out special drives in plainclothes to track down and nab criminals.

The teams' 'dangerous connections' with criminals came to light in an investigation into sub-inspector Humayun Kabir killing case.

Tipped-off by a civil police team member, a gang, allegedly led by Pichchi Hannan, opened fire on Kabir's team which was going to raid its hideout in an under-construction building at Agargaon on June 3.

There were allegations of such connections in some other recent police fatalities.
