The deputy commissioner (DC) of Bhola and officer-in-charge (OC) of the Sadar Police Station were ordered to pay Tk 75 lakh to Naziur Rahman Manjur, chairman of the Bangladesh Jatiya Party, in damages for defamation and destruction of his house by a court in Bhola yesterday.

The Joint District and Sessions Judge's Court in Bhola ordered the twin, the then DC Abdul Mannan and OC Forkan Ali Sikendar, to pay Naziur the amount evenly within 60 days. The convicts however have the right to appeal in higher courts.

The BJP leader filed the case on May 18, 1998 when some unruly people set his house on fire.

Abdul Mannan was the official custodian of the house 'Shan Neer' at Ukilpara in Bhola as it was confiscated following a court order. The court ruled for confiscation when Naziur, accused in a corruption case, had been absconding.

Naziur sued the DC for neglecting duty and the OC for instigating the people to torch the house instead of stopping them.

"It's the duty of the government to protect the life and property of people. And this verdict will act as an eye-opener to the government officials who fail to exercise their executive duties," said the BJP chairman to The Daily Star after the court ruling.
