Three heroin smugglers sent to jail

Three Pakistani passport holders arrested on Wednesday with about 14 kilograms of heroin stuffed into 176 toothpaste tubes at Zia International Airport (ZIA) were sent to the Dhaka Central Jail yesterday.

The three are Noor Jahan Begum, Nazma Begum and Kohinoor Begum. They were produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, Dhaka, yesterday. The magistrate ordered them to jail as there were no remand prayers.

The defence lawyers submitted a bail prayer but the court rejected the petition. The court also directed the jail authorities to allow Mohammad Akram, two-year-old son of Kohinoor Begum, to be with his mother.

The trio alleged that the officer-in-charge of the Airport Police Station tortured them during the three-day remand. Despite the court order that a female officer should interrogate them, a male officer interrogated them, they alleged.

They were blindfolded and hot water was poured into their noses, they further alleged.
