Only three members from the 28-member committee of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) attended the official tribute at National Martyrs’ Memorial on Independence Day.

According to Ducsu’s official Facebook page, Fatima Tasnim Zuma (Liberation War and Democratic Movement secretary), Arman Hosen (Sports secretary), and Iqbal Haider (Science and Technology secretary) paid homage on behalf of the union.

Explaining the absence of the remaining 25 members, including key office‑bearers, Zuma said Vice President Abu Shadik Kayem is abroad, while General Secretary SM Farhad was delayed by traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

She added that many leaders had not yet returned to campus due to the university closure.

Farhad later told The Daily Star that he had started early but was stuck in traffic, missing both Ducsu’s programme and Islami Chhatra Shibir’s programme.

Ducsu had earlier marked Genocide Day on March 25 through online tributes and announced upcoming initiatives, including cultural competitions and the Independence Day National Barowari Debate Competition 2026.

Zuma noted that these programmes are being organised from their own funds, as they have not received support from the treasurer. Planned cultural events will feature music and recitation centred on themes of independence.
