Tigresses move closer to T20 WC qualification
Bangladesh moved a step closer to qualifying for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup after beating Thailand by 39 runs in the qualifying tournament in Mulpani, Nepal on Wednesday.
With the win, Bangladesh now need just one victory from their remaining two matches to secure direct qualification for the World Cup. Even a rain-abandoned match yielding one point would be enough to confirm their place in the tournament.
Batting first after losing the toss, Bangladesh posted 165 for eight in their 20 overs. Thailand, in reply, were restricted to 126 for eight, falling well short of the target.
Bangladesh made a shaky start as opener Dilara Akter was dismissed for a golden duck off the first ball, while Sharmin Akter scored 11 off nine balls. However, Juwairiya Ferdous and Shobhana Mostary steadied the innings with a 110-run partnership for the third wicket, which laid the foundation for a competitive total.
Both batters registered half-centuries. Juwairiya scored 56 from 43 balls -- her first in national colours -- hitting three fours and four sixes, while Shobhana made 59 off 42 deliveries, including nine fours and a six.
The lower order failed to add significant runs, although Ritu Moni provided a late flourish with a quick 15 off six balls. Swarna Akter (4), captain Nigar Sultana Joty (6), Rabeya Khan (5) and Fahima Khatun (1) made small contributions.
Thailand lost early wickets in the chase but showed some resistance through Nathakan Chantham, who top-scored with 44. Naruemol Chaiwai added 30, while Nannapat Koncharoenkeat made 29. No other Thai batter reached double figures.
For Bangladesh, Marufa Akter was the most successful bowler with three wickets. Ritu Moni and Swarna Akter claimed two wickets each, while Fahima Khatun took one.
