Tigers on the receiving end of several top displays
In the second edition of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), which began last year on August 4 with India taking on England in Trent Bridge and is scheduled to finish on 31 March in 2023, a total of 35 Tests have been played so far as South Africa beat Bangladesh at home on April 11.
The next phase of the WTC will begin with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka locking horns in the first Test of the two-match series in Chattogram on May 15.
- Spinners dominate chart -
As far as the top five bowling performances are concerned, spinners dominate the list with four out of five entries, three of which had the Mominul Haque-led side in complete chaos. Keshav Maharaj was the latest to have spun the Tigers with two successive seven-wicket hauls in the span of nine days and 22 overs before Sajid Khan took eight-fer in Chattogram last year to brutally expose the Tigers' weakness against quality spin bowling.
New Zealand's Ajaz Patel, following a historic 10-wicket haul against India in Mumbai last year, leads the bowling chart while his fellow compatriot Matt Henry was the only fast bowler to have entered the top five with his seven-fer against South Africa earlier in February.
- Latham's double ton against Bangladesh stands out -
On the batting front, New Zealand captain Tom Latham's brilliant 252 under pressure against Bangladesh in Christchurch sits pretty at the top of list as the only double century score.
Latham pulled off his brilliant knock to hand the Tigers an innings defeat after the visitors stunned the Kiwis with a win in Mount Maunganui in the previous Test of the two-match series.
Pakistan's Babar Azam and Azhar Ali occupy the second and third spot with their century scores against Australia at home this year, followed by Joe Root and Rabindra Jadeja for their tons against India and Sri Lanka, respectively
- Tigers with the lowest team total -
Bangladesh's 53 all out against South Africa in the second innings of the Durban Test remains the lowest team total so far in the ongoing WTC. The Tigers also obtained the fifth lowest total as well to become the only team with two entries in the top five lowest scores after they were 80 all out in the following Test in Gqeberha.
- Bangladesh on the receiving end of third-highest total -
Four teams have been able to pile up 500-plus scores with India's 574 for eight against Sri Lanka in Mohali in March remains the highest of the lot while New Zealand's 521 for six against Bangladesh in Christchurch sits at the third spot.
- Bangladesh still ahead of England despite SA debacle -
Australia lead the WTC table, in terms of the ratio between points obtained and points contested, with 75 per cent while South Africa, after a convincing 2-0 series win at home against Bangladesh, are close behind the Aussies with 71 per cent. Bangladesh find themselves at the eighth spot (16.66) of the nine-team table, marginally ahead of England (12.50).
