The great men we have lost in 2017
In 2017 the world bid farewell to many iconic celebrities, artists and musicians. The Daily Star would like to take a moment to honour some of the people who passed away in both home and abroad. These talented people will always be remembered for their impact on the world of film, television and politics.
The following list consists a brief description about these notable people.
1. Abdur Razzak (January 23, 1942 - August 21, 2017)
Abdur Razzak also known as Nayak Raj Razzak was a Bangladeshi actor and film director. He died at the age of 75 on 21 August. Among his achievements he won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actor five times in a row and recieved the Independence Day Award in 2015.
2. Om Prakash Puri (October 18, 1950 - January 6, 2017)
This versitle Bollywood actor actor appeared in various mainstream commercial Indian films, as well as independent and art films. Puri passed away at the age of 66 on January 6. He was awarded ‘Padma Shri’, the fourth highest civilian award of India, in 1990.
3. Tom Petty (October 20, 1950 - October 2, 2017)
Tom Petty was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor. He was the lead vocalist of 'Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' band which was formed back in 1976. Petty passed away at the age of 66 on October 20.
4. Shashi Kapoor (March 18, 1938 - December 4, 2017)
Veteran Bollywood actor and producer Shashi Kapoor died at the age of 79. He was one of the best-loved actors of Bollywood. In 2011, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government for his contributions to Art and Cinema.
5. Roger Moore (October 14, 1927 - May 23, 2017)
Roger Moore, an English actor, was best known for playing the role of James Bond, died at the age of 89. In 2008, the French government appointed Moore as the Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
6. Lucky Akhand (June 18, 1956 - April 21, 2017)
Lucky Akhand was a Bangladeshi singer and composer. He served as the music director of Bangladeshi national radio network 'Bangladesh Betar'. Lucky Akhand passed away on april 21 at the age of 60.
7. Jong Hyun (April 8, 1990 - December 18, 2017)
Kim Jong-hyun better known by his stage name Jong Hyun was a South Korean singer-songwriter, radio host and author. He was a vocalist of the South Korean boy band group ‘Shinee’. His tragic death was mourned by many musicians and industry professionals worldwide.
8. Dick Gregory (October 12, 1932 - August 19, 2017)
Dick Gregory, an African-American comedian, civil rights activist, social critic, conspiracy theorist, occasional actor, died at the age of 84. He was at the forefront of political activism in the 1960s, when he protested the Vietnam War and racial injustice.
9. Chester Bennington (March 20, 1976 - July 20, 2017)
Linkin Park front man Chester Bennington’s tragic death left millions of his fans at shock and heart broken. He was one of the most talented and influential rock artists of his generation. Chester passed away on July 20 at the age of 41.
10. Charles Murphy (July 12, 1959 - April 12, 2017)
Charles Murphy was an American actor, comedian, and writer. He was best known as a writer and cast member of the Comedy Central sketch-comedy series Chappelle's Show. Murphy passed away on April 12 at the age of 82.
11. Bari Siddiqui (Novermber 15, 1954 - November 24, 2017)
This legendary singer died at the age of 63 on Novermber 15. Bari was a Bangladeshi singer-songwriter, flutist and folk musician. He received the Bachsas Award for his music direction in Srabon Megher Din for rendering the song ‘Showa Chan Pakhi’.
12. Annisul Huq (October 27, 1952 - Novermber 30, 2017)
Annisul Huq was the mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation. Apart from this, he was also known mainly as a successful businessman and a popular TV show host. Annisul died at the age of 65 on 30 November.
13. Abdul Jabbar (November 7, 1938 - August 30, 2017)
Eminent Bangladeshi singer, freedom fighter Abdul Jabbar died at the age of 80 on 30 August. Jabbar was best known for his patriotic songs like ‘salam salam hajar salam’ ‘tumi ki dekhecho kovhu’ and ‘sharhe shaat koti manusher aaj ekti naam’ which inspired many freedom fighters during the Liberation War of 1971.
