600 opposition men get bail

A High Court bench yesterday granted anticipatory bail to around 600 leaders and activists of BNP and its front organisations in 10 cases filed on different charges. The cases were filed following the opposition's countrywide blockade on December 9 last year and its hartal on January 6. Zainul Abedin, principal counsel for the accused petitioners, told The Daily Star the police filed the cases on charges of torching cars and preventing police from discharging duties on last December 9 and January 6. He said that his clients have filed the bail petitions with the HC on different days of last week. The accused, who received bail, include BNP's central committee member Lutfar Rahman, Jatiytabadi Jubo Dal President Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Swechchhasebak Dal President Habib-un Nabi Khan Sohel and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) President Abdul Qader Bhuiyan Jewel. The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury passed the orders of anticipatory bail after hearing 57 petitions filed by the leaders and activists seeking anticipatory bail in the cases. The bench also directed the petitioners to surrender before the lower courts concerned in connection with the cases by February 12. The leaders and workers appeared before the HC bench yesterday seeking bail in the cases.
