Sawmill workers protest abduction

Our Correspondent, Rangamati
Workers of different sawmills yesterday brought out a procession and put up barricades on the main road at New Court Building point in the town protesting Monday's abduction of three staff of a plywood factory. From a rally held in New Court Building area, the protesters issued a three-day ultimatum to law enforcers to rescue the abducted staff of the factory and arrest the culprits involved. Otherwise, they threatened to go for a tougher agitation. They held Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) and anti-peace treaty organisation United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) responsible for such incidents in the hills. Members of both organisations are involved in the incidents kidnapping and extortion and hill people have become hostages to them, they alleged. An armed gang kidnapped Julfiker Ali Bhutto, manager of the plywood factory, and two workers Bacha Mia and Nur Mohammed on Monday night. They came to Samota Ghat (river terminal) in the town in an engine boat, stormed into the nearby plywood factory and picked up the three from there at gunpoint. Contacted, Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam of Sadar Police Station said a joint team, comprising army, police and Rab personnel are raiding different areas to rescue the abducted staff of the plywood factory.
