Steps demanded to stop operation of illegal brick kilns
The Brick Kiln Owners' Association hare formed a human chain in the district town yesterday, demanding steps to stop operation of illegal brick fields.
Earlier, a discussion was held addressed by Murad Hossain, district unit president of the association and its general secretary Sontos Agorwal.
The speakers said, at least 27 brick kilns were using illegal drum chimney in violation of environment rules, posing serious threat to the croplands in the surrounding areas.
Those kilns continued operation without obtaining any license from Department of Environment (DoE), they said.
The association also urged the government to take punitive actions against those responsible for the offence.
According to the Brick Burning (Control) Act, 1989, setting up of brick kilns in municipalities and residential areas and near fruit orchards or on cropland is prohibited.
