Man jailed for 12 yrs for bank robbery

A court here has sentenced a man to 12 years' rigorous imprisonment for looting Bhatpara branch of Sonali Bank in Abhaynagar upazila 17 years ago. The convict is Nazrul Islam alias Nazu, son of Abdul Khaleq Molla of the upazila. According to the prosecution, on the night of October 17, 1995, a gang of armed robbers, numbering 20/25, stormed into the Bhatpara branch office of Sonali Bank. They entered the office by taking its guard hostage at gunpoint. Later the robbers looted Tk 85,000, one rifle and 22 bullets. Branch manager Manik Sheikh filed a case against 25/30 unidentified people on the following day in this connection. After examining the records and witnesses, Joint District and Sessions Judge Begum Dilruba Sultana on October 31 handed down the verdict. The court sentenced Nazu to seven years' rigorous imprisonment under Section 397 and fined him Tk 6,000, in default to suffer six months' RI more. The court gave him more five years' rigorous imprisonment under Section 412 and fined him Tk 3,000, in default to suffer six months' RI more.
