100 hurt in Gopalganj clashes

At least 100 people, including women, were injured as members of two influential families locked in fierce clashes at Bahirbag village in Kashiani upazila yesterday morning. A dozen houses were ransacked and looted by the rival groups during the clashes. Police arrested five people and fired at least twice at the mob to control the situation. Among the injured, 32 people were admitted to the Gopalganj Sadar Hospital and 11 taken to Kashiani health complex and Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Police and villagers said that there was a longstanding conflict between the families of Sharif and Mia of the village. Both the families were trying to establish supremacy in the locality. Yesterday morning, two groups, equipped with country-made lethal weapons, locked in bloody clashes, leaving at least 100 injured from both groups. In Chapainawabganj, a man was killed in an attack by rivals over a land dispute at Bishwanathpur village in Shibganj upazila early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Abdul Qaiyum, 40, son of Abdul Kashim of the village, reports our correspondent. Police said there had been a longstanding between Qaiyum and his cousins -- Bahadur and Mahbub -- over a piece of land. As a sequel to the dispute, an altercation took place among them in the morning and at one stage a group of 6-7 people led by Bahadur and Mahbub beat up Qaiyum mercilessly, leaving him severely injured. Later, Qaiyum died at the upazila health complex. Police arrested one Mintu, 60, in this connection. In Brahmanbaria, one person was beaten to death by his opponents at Noagong village under Sarail upazila on Sunday night, reports our correspondent. The deceased was identified as Md. Habib of Noagong village. According to eyewitnesses, police and hospital sources, there was a longstanding enmity between Habib and neighbour Md. Nurul Islam over a disputed land. On Sunday night Nurul Islam's group beat up Habib mercilessly. Hibib succumbed to his injuries on the way to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital. In Magura, a fierce clash between two groups of people of Modonpur and Srigram villages in Sripur upazila left at least 20 people injured on Sunday, reports UNB. The clash ensued following an altercation over a trifling matter among the rival groups. Four houses and a shop were also vandalised during the clash in the morning.
