Housewife 'murdered', another allegedly commits suicide

Police recovered a housewife's body that was hanging from a tree at Arulia village in Kahalu upazila on Friday. The deceased was identified as Rujina, 26, wife of Atiqul Islam of the village and also mother of two children. Neighbours saw the body hanging from a jackfruit tree in front of Nasir Uddin's house in the morning and informed the police. Later, the law enforcers recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy. Rujina's husband went into hiding after the incident. Locals said Atiqul was a gambler. The couple often quarreled over the matter as Rujina protested gambling. Atiqul tortured her to death for this, they said. OC of Kahaloo PS said that they would not make any comment before getting the autopsy report. In Barisal, a housewife allegedly committed suicide in Kawnia Christian Colony area yesterday afternoon, reports our correspondent. Rafikul Islam, officer in-charge of Kawnia police station, said that victim Dola Chowdhury, 35, was wife of carpenter Ashok Chowdhury and mother of Ujjal, 12. Dola was suffering from mental depression since long and was under treatment of a doctor, police said quoting family sources. Yesterday noon, in absence of the family members, Dola doused herself with kerosene and tried to self-immolate. Neighbours rescued Dola and took her to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Dola was referred to DMCH but she died on the way to Dhaka in the evening.
