Huge banned guidebooks seized in Rangpur, 2 held

Detective Branch of police seized hundreds of banned guidebooks and notebooks worth Tk 12 lakh in Librarypara area on Station Road in the city on Friday and arrested two people in this connection. Arrestees Rafiqul Islam Loton, 40, son of late Chabir Uddin of Guptapara, is the owner of New Bani Manzil Library and its salesman Alamgir Hossain, 42, son of Anser Ali of Gobardhan village under Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat. On secret information, a team of DB police raided the library at dead of night and arrested Loton and Alamgir along with 2,393 guidebooks of class I to VIII worth Tk 8.86 lakh, said sub-inspector Mostafizar Rahman. DB police again raided the shop on Friday afternoon and seized several thousand guidebooks and notebooks from a hidden place on the rooftop, the SI added. Meanwhile, bookshop owners enforced a two-day long strike yesterday to protest the arrests.
