Students stage protest alleging corruption by principal

Our Correspondent, Dinajpur
The principal of Dinajpur Textile Institute had to leave office yesterday in face of student protest for alleged corruption. The agitated students also boycotted their classes, burnt an effigy of Principal MM Zahurul Haque Rabbani and demanded his removal immediately. Ashiqul Islam Limon, a final year student and convener of Chhatra Sangram Parishad, said they had to pay Tk 3,200 as fee to sit for examinations in July, 2011. The students termed the amount exorbitant and demanded the removal of the principal. Following the fee hike, Zahurul Haque went on leave, said Limon. The agitation erupted again when the principal came back to the campus yesterday morning. At one stage, the students confined him to his office for about three hours. Later, the principal left the campus under police escort. In 2008, the principal was caught red-handed by the law enforcers while taking bribe from admission seekers, said campus sources. Contacted, the principal refuted the allegations.
