People of several areas in Jamalpur town are badly suffering for want of pure drinking water as water supplied by the municipality is too dirty and stinky for use. The situation has continued for about two months as water pipelines, mostly running along drains, developed leaks through which liquid wastes get mixed with the water. The worst affected areas are Munshipara, Daripara, Fulbaria, Paschim Fulbaria, Gatepar, Station Road, Doyamoyee Road, Sardarpara Mosque area and Bazrapur. Subscribers of these areas are getting supply of stinky water mixed with clay and wastes. In some cases, worm-like creatures are found in the water. Several people said they cannot use the water for bathing and washing clothes, let alone drinking and cooking. "My 10-year-old son Tamim is suffering from skin disease as a result of using filthy water. I informed the municipality authority of the matter but to no effect," said Jesmin Ferdousi, a senior teacher of Bangladesh High School at Daripara in the town. When contacted, Md Shahab Uddin, water supply superintendent of the municipality, said, "In most cases, water supply connections to the houses are made with pipelines that went through drainage lines spreading across the town. The pipelines might have leaked, causing the water to get mixed with drain liquids." "Several consumers complained that they are getting supply of stinky water mixed with clay and filth. We are trying our best to detect the leaked pipelines and repair those so that residents can get pure water,” he said. Jamalpur district unit president of Consumers Association of Bangladesh Prof Masum Alam Khan said, "Mixing of the drain liquids with supply water is obviously a threat to human health. The authority concerned should solve the problem as soon as possible." Contacted, municipality Mayor advocate Shah Md Wares Ali Mamun said, "A number of people of several areas of the municipality have complained to me about the matter. I have already directed the officials and staff of water supply section to take immediate steps to solve the problem."
