Eight get life for double murder in Netrakona
A court here on Wednesday sentenced eight people to life imprisonment in a double-murder case.
The convicts are Moula Mia, Bachchu Mia, Sahan Mia, Anukul Mia, Shafiqul, Joydhon, Ershad Mia and Jaudge Mia of Montola village under Kalmakanda upazila.
Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each, in default they are to suffer four years more in jail.
According to the prosecution, Hasu Mia, 60, and Almas Mia, 35, of Montola village were killed during a clash between the people of Panchura and Montola villages on April 1, 2002. The clash occurred during an arbitration over death of a cow in a road accident in the area on the day.
Victims' family filed a case with Kalmakanda Police Station the same day. After investigation, police pressed charges against 25 people.
After examining the witnesses and evidence, Judge Belayet Ullah handed down the verdict. He also acquitted 18 others as charges brought against them could not be proved.
In another case, the same court on the same day sentenced one Polash, son of Matiur Rahaman of Monatia village under Kendua upazila, to life imprisonment for killing a girl after rape at the village on May 17 in 2001.
