Explosion kills 1

An auto-rickshaw mechanic was killed and another injured in an explosion at a scrap shop in Durgapur upazila of Netrakona on Sunday night.

The victim was identified as Sabuj Mia, 40, son of late Yead Ali of Chalitapara village in the upazila.

Quoting locals, Officer in Charge of Durgapur Police Station Shahnoor Alam said Sabuj, a mechanic, was waiting at a scarp shop owned by Kanchan Mia at Masjid Market in Shibganj area around 10:30pm on Sunday when suddenly something kept in the shop exploded with a big bang, killing Sabuj on the spot and injuring Nahid Mia, 25.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Netrakona General Hospital for autopsy.

Critically injured Nahid was taken to Durgapur Upazila Health Complex, from where he was shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

Nahid sustained 25 percent burn injuries during the incident, the OC added.

Police said some old batteries along with scrap items were kept at the shop, but they were yet to find out the real cause behind the explosion.
