College student killed, 1 held

A college student was killed allegedly over a trifling matter in Baufal upazila yesterday.

The deceased, Shaon Khandaker, 25, son of Zakir Hossain of Bilbilas village, was a post graduate student at Tongi Government College in the capital.

Police, however, arrested a youth for his alleged involvement in the murder.

The arrestee, Rajib Raja, 24, is son of Fayez Raja of neighbouring Madanpur village alleged involved in this regard.

Quoting locals, police said Shaon, who came home to celebrate his Eid holidays, had an altercation with Rajib over a trifling matter at Bilbilas Bazar on Sunday night.

As a sequel, Rajib attacked Shaon with a broken glass and hit him on the neck while he was taking tea at a stall in Bilbilas Bazar around 11:00am yesterday, leaving him critically injured.

Later, local people rescued injured Shaon and took him to Baufal Upazila Health Complex, where the doctors declared him dead.

Officer in Charge (OC) of Baufal Police Station Mostafizur Rahman said, being informed, a police team went to the spot and detained Rajib, while he was fleeing the area crossing a flooded paddy field, and took him to the police station for quizzing.

They also recovered Shaon's body and sent it to Patuakhali General Hospital for autopsy, the OC said, adding that they will take necessary steps in this regard after investigation.
