Essence of songs has gone missing
“There are very few quality songs nowadays. What we hear now cannot be called songs in the true sense,” says renowned Nazrul singer Salauddin Ahmed as he expresses his unhappiness on the distortion of songs of yesteryears.
In his words, “A majority of songs of contemporary times are not songs as such; they are merely music! It is true that the media is creating platforms for singers but the essence of real songs is being lost. Singers who present Nazrul Sangeet are not considered singers in this era. The introduction of revised songs is distorting the melody of the original version.”
“The media are not promoting singers who are truly talented. Even if there are talented artistes, the lyrics of the majority of songs are atrocious. Most of the time people who claim to be singers need proper guidance. They are focused on fame and that too, with the help of electronic devices, modifying their voice to sing. This surely reduces the gravity of a song.”
“In our time, people used to practice for years to become prominent singers. Performing songs is not easy. I have practiced for 40 years of my life and I still practice. As a Nazrul song involves several styles beginning from pure raga based to the light classical to light hearted songs, singing Nazrul Sangeet takes years of practice and dedication.”
“People should revive old music and the melodies of Nazrul Sangeet. Since the media has changed the entire genre of music, it's time that they should take some initiative to bring it to life.”
