Preparations on for RCC election by early Dec

Preparations are on to hold the Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) polls by early December in line with the constitutional obligation for holding the election within 180 days of its formation. Contacted, Md. Israil Hossain, Election Officer of Rangpur Zone said, “On receiving a letter issued by M. Shah Newaz, Election Commissioner (EC) of Bangladesh, we are taking all-out preparations to hold the RCC polls within the deadline”. The commission has already taken an initiative to use around 800 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in the polls, he added. Copies of a letter have been sent to Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) and Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory (BMTF) for preparing the EVMs, said Hossain. The election officer said that the district election office was also taking necessary steps to include the remaining eligible people in the existing voter list. Regarding the voter list, district election officer Md Nuruzzaman Talukder said, “Work for updating the voter list of the RCC area is progressing fast." We have started a day-long training programme yesterday for the supervisors who will go door to door to collect data for updating the voter list in 10 days from today. They will also take photographs of the voters from July 27 till August 14, he added. The Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Ministry through a gazette notification on June 28 made the Rangpur divisional town a city corporation from July 1, 2012.
