Students of three schools in Panchagarh and Brahmanbaria districts yesterday joined the English language fairs held under English in Schools (EIS) programme, a joint initiative of The Daily Star and mobile operator Robi. Adcom Ltd is the creative and event partner of the fairs. In Panchagarh, over 150 students of Aladini Government Girls' High School and Nipendra Narayan Government High School at Debiganj upazila headquarters participated in the English language fair at Aladini Government Girls' High School auditorium, reports our correspondent. Md Ataur Rahman, headmaster of the school, inaugurated the fair at around 11:00am. He urged the continuation of English in Schools programme to encourage English learning among the students. Teachers of the two schools and guardians of the students were also present. Globally famous movie The Lion King was screened, followed by quizzes on vocabulary, situation-based questions, extempore speech, role play and etiquette test. Selected students took part in extempore speech on different topics and role play. Students entertained the audience by telling jokes and singing songs. Eighteen students won different competitions. Headmaster Ataur Rahman distributed prizes among the winners at the end of the programme. Our Brahmanbaria correspondent reported that at least 200 students of Nabinagar Pilot High School at Nabinagar upazila headquarters took part in joyful events at the English language fair held at the school auditorium. Headmaster Abu Musa opened the fair at around 11:00am. He said such programme will promote English language learning among school students. Assistant Headmaster Md Wazed Ullah Jasim and senior English teacher Md Wali Ullah also spoke. Guardians of the students were present. Following screening of The Lion King, a globally renowned movie, the students participated in spot quiz, vocabulary test, and situation-based question answer--all based on the movie. Selected students took part in extempore speech on different topics and role-play. Students also entertained the audience by reciting poems, telling jokes and singing songs. Robi representatives Md Fahad, conducted the programme. Prizes were distributed among the winners at the end of the programme. Students formed an English language club at the school. Aiming to promote English language learning among school students across the country, The Daily Star in cooperation with Robi undertook English in Schools programme in 2009. Under the initiative, each of one thousand schools selected from 64 districts of the country receives three complimentary copies of The Daily Star five days a week. The ongoing English language fairs at different schools are being held in coordination with the education ministry as part of the three-year-long programme.
