Pabna University of Science and Technology
Meeting fails to end stalemate
The meeting between the authorities of Pabna University of Science and Technology and the agitating workers yesterday failed to bring any solution to the ongoing stalemate at the institution.
“We sat with the agitating workers and assured them to consider their demands according to rule. We asked them to withdraw their work abstention but they did not give any decision. Discussion will continue to solve the problem," Dilip Kumar Sarkar, chairman of electrical and electronic engineering, head of the discussion committee formed by the authority, said after the meeting at the university administrative building in the morning.
Earlier on June 19, class three and four employees and workers of the university started indefinite work abstention to press for their nine-point demand including removal of the proctor, right to form workers union, ensuring promotion and overtime facility for the workers, pay scale for diploma employees, priority to the graduate and post graduate employees for promotion in service, and ensuring permanent jobs for members of the family who had donated land for the university.
“We have started demonstration to secure our job. During today's [Sunday] meeting, the university authorities did not meet our demands. They only gave some assurances. Agitating workers have declined to join their work until realisation of the demands,” said Md Shohag Hossain, a computer operator of the university.
"The workers will take decision about their further step today [Sunday]," he added.
Pabna University of Science and Technology faced a stalemate from June 17 as students supported by a section of local Chhatra League activists started agitation demanding resignation of the vice chancellor for what they said widespread corruption and nepotism in recruitment at the university. The situation worsened as the workers and employees started demonstration and work abstention on June 19.
The university authorities postponed their scheduled Regent Board meeting on June 23 due to the unrest.
