KMCH docs on strike to realise demands
BMA district unit extends support
Doctors of Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) yesterday went on an indefinite strike to press home their three-point demand including arrest of those who vandalised the hospital and assaulted some doctors following death of a patient on Sunday.
They also demanded that the government ensure security of all doctors and better treatment facilities at all public hospitals in the district.
They alleged that some outsiders stormed into the KMCH on Sunday and beat up the doctors following death of a deed writer who was admitted to the hospital with bullet injuries on the day.
Doctors of other public hospitals in the city have expressed solidarity with the KMCH doctors and decided to observe two-hour work abstention everyday at their respective hospitals from 9:00am until the demands are met.
The strike is causing immense sufferings to the patients. Civil Surgeon Murtoza told the news agency yesterday that they extended their support to the demands of KMCH doctors.
He, however, said the two-hour work abstention will not hamper emergency services at of the hospitals.
Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Khulna district unit has also expressed solidarity with the KMCH doctors.
Khan Mohammad Zakir Hossain, joint secretary of Khulna Deed Writers Association (KDWA), was gunned down by a gang of criminals in front of KCC Market on Sunday evening. He was rushed to KMCH where he succumbed to his wounds at around 8:30pm.
Following the death, victim's relatives and colleagues vandalised the operation theatre (OT) of the hospital and attacked the doctors and employees, leaving them injured.
They also attacked different wards and beat up the on-duty doctors and nurses, alleging that their negligence led to the death of Zakir.
