<i>Villagers beat fishing cat dead for nothing</i>

Villagers beat a fishing cat, locally known as bon biral ,dead at Kalikagaon village under Sadar upazila yesterday. Local people and forest officials said, former UP member Mozammel Haque saw the animal in a maize field in the morning. Being chased, when it took shelter at one Rafiquddin's house at the village, hundreds of villagers encircled the fishing cat with sticks. After killing the animal they hung it from the branch of a tree. On information, forest officials went to the village, recovered the body and later filed a General Diary (GD) with Thakurgaon police station. Contacted, officer in charge of Thakurgaon PS Gopal Chakraborty told this correspondent over cell phone that he will investigate the matter and take action as per the existing law. According to Bangladesh Wildlife Protection Act, killing any wild animal is a punishable offence.
