Lightning kills 13 in five districts

At least 13 people were killed and nine others injured as lightning struck them in Gazipur, Sherpur, Gopalganj, Jamalpur and Sylhet districts yesterday and the day before. In Sherpur, three madrasa students were killed by thunderbolt at Chhatrakona in Nokla upazila yesterday afternoon, reports UNB. The deceased are Minhazul Islam, 15, Chan Miah, 12 and Masud Miah, 10 -- all students of Chhatrakona Moffazalia Madrasa. Urfa union chairman in the upazila Anisur Rahman said when the students were playing in the playground of the madrasa during tiffin hour, a thunderbolt struck them at about 1:30pm, leaving the trio seriously injured. They were taken to local health complex where the doctors declared them dead. In Gazipur, two people died as lightning struck them at Bhobanipur village in Sadar upazila, according to the news agency. Quoting locals police said, Sujan, 27, and Dolon, 26, of Patpocha village in the upazila were critically injured by a thunderbolt at around 8am while they were going to their workplace during rain. They were rushed to Sadar Hospital where they died at about 9:15am. In Gopalganj, two people were killed and five injured by lightning at Uttarpar village in Kotalipara upazila. Quoting witnesses, officer in-charge of Kotalipara PS Tota Miah said Nihar Dhali, 25, of Burua village and Sujan Gain, 17, of Shimulbari village were killed and five others injured being hit by thunderbolt while working at a watermelon field amid rain. The injured were admitted to upazila health complex. Meanwhile, in Jamalpur, lightning left two people dead and four others wounded at Tin Ani in Bakshiganj upazila. Witnesses said a thunderbolt hit the passengers of a human hauler, leaving Murshedul Islam, 30, and Chan Miah, 26, of Nayapara village, dead on the spot and four others injured at 2pm yesterday. The injured were admitted to upazila health complex. In Sylhet, three people were killed in separate lightning strikes in Sadar and Surma upazilas on Sunday noon. The deceased were identified as Ashique Ali, 45, of Sirajpur Kalirgaon village, Nesar Ali, 25, son of Irfan Ali of Kandi village in Surma upazila and Ana Mia, 40, son of late Askir Ali of Mohammadpur village of the same upazila. Locals said, Ashique Ali died on the spot as lightning struck him when he went to bring back his cattle from a nearby field at about 12 noon. Nesar Ali was struck by lightning and died at his home at around 3pm. In another incident, lightning killed Ana Mia at 4pm.
