Woman, daughter burnt to death in Rajshahi fire

A woman and her daughter were burnt to death in a fire at Helenabad Colony in the city on Monday. The dead are Shimi Khatun, 24, wife of Ziaul Islam and her daughter Sumaiya, 3. Rajshahi Sadar fire station officer Khurshid Anwar said residents of the building informed them that they noticed smoke billowing from the first floor. On information, a firefighting unit rushed to the spot but the fire was doused before they arrived. Rescuers recovered the charred bodies of the mother and the daughter from the kitchen by breaking open the door of the house. The bodies were sent to hospital for autopsy. Firefighters said, the fire originated from electric short circuit while the woman was cooking in a rice cooker. In Naogaon, an elderly woman who sustained burn injuries at Khas Naogaon in the district town on Saturday, died at hospital early Sunday. The deceased was identified as Rabeya Khatun, 50, wife of Khalilur Rahman of the area. Family sources said, Rabeya suddenly caught fire while lighting up a hurricane lamp after electricity went out on Saturday evening. She was rushed to Naogaon Sadar Hospital and later shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on the night following deterioration of her condition. She succumbed to her injuries at the RMCH in the early hours of Sunday.
