University education: then and now

Prior to 1971, that is in the pre-independence days, Dhaka University used to be known as the Oxford of the East. However, During the rule of Ayub Khan and his Governor late Monem Khan the situation in the educational institutions and in particular Dhaka University deteriorated culminating in the continuous nosedive since the independence. I had the good fortune of being a student of Dhaka University in the mid 1950's and have seen the educational environment, relations between the teachers and the students and last but not the least the relations amongst the students. We saw the leaderships of different organisations. Students' halls were in the hands of the top students by virtue of their being so. So a comparison of that time with that of the present day situation will simply shudder one. So instead of moving forward, the situation in each and every aspect has not only deteriorated but is still going downward.
A perusal of the present day environment of the educational arena, quality and dedication of the teachers and the activities of the students at all levels and the facilities available in the institutions at any level presents a very dismal picture. Startling gaps exist between the quality of education that is promised and what is eventually delivered to the students!
Many of our renowned educationists are seen quite often in different forums highlighting different problems and suggesting the remedies of these problems. But I am yet to see any sustained efforts in this most vital sector as yet by these educationists.
We need relentless efforts to restore order in this sector as this is the most vital sector. Besides, it is felt that if appropriate education at all levels is imparted, then many of the ills that the nation is afflicted with will be removed. So, let these educationists, who are so vocal on other issues, make appropriate efforts in this sector to restore DU's earlier name and fame for the well being of the nation.
