Labourers resume work as wage rises

Following rise in wage, the workers at Burimari land port in the district resumed work yesterday,    ending the two-day strike they had imposed on Saturday morning.   

Safar Uddin, a labour leader in the land port, also the president of Burimari unit of Bangladesh Sangjukta Sramik Federation, said their wages have been increased from Tk 31 to Tk 39 for loading and unloading one tonne of goods.

Labourers said Patgram upazila parishad chairman, also the contractor to recruit labourers, Ruhul Amin Babul gets Tk 55.64 from the land port authority for loading and unloading one tonne of goods, but he pays them only Tk 39. As many as 1,600 enlisted labourers are engaged in loading and unloading goods in the land port.

"We would be more happy if our wage was  increased to Tk 45 as per our demand," said labourer Ramjan Ali, 46.
